Juice Recipes For Better Health

Feb 29 2012 Published by Alannah H under Juicers, Tips

I love juicing, and I also love my juice recipes! I like to keep things simple when juicing, and most of my recipes contain only one or two ingredients.

Some people like to have a medley of fruits in their juices, but when you mix in too many ingredients, you tend to mix the flavors as well, which means that you can’t taste the individual juices. I prefer to have one core ingredient as in the recipes below, and then add ginger to give some zing, or lemon/lime to add a twist.

At the end of the day, the kind of juices you make is entirely up to your own preferences, just like the juicer you own is up to your needs and likes.

Let’s get straight into the recipes!

Watermelon Juice

Watermelon juice is one of the most refreshing juices ever! It’s quite sweet and tastes love. Watermelon contains lycopene, a very powerful antioxidant. It’s also high in vitamin C and Beta Carotene.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watermelon#Nutrition

Grapefruit Juice

Grapefruit juice is quite cheap, considering how much juice you get from just one single grapefruit! This juice is a great source of vitamin c.

Orange Juice

Freshly squeezed orange juice is a classic, and it’s my treat to myself on the weekends! OJ contains heaps of Vitamin C, as well as potassium, thiamine and folate.

Carrot Juice

Carrot juice is actually much sweeter than you’d think and is a great source of trace minerals and Vitamins A and K.

Orange, Carrot and Ginger Juice

Mixing up oranges and carrots leads to a nice flavourful drink. While ginger adds a nice kick! Children probably won’t like ginger but this drink is a great “pick me up”. Ginger has powerful antioxidant properties and is very soothing if you have a cold or sore throat.

Green Juice

My favorite green juice recipe consists of apples, cucumbers, spinach and kale. The more spinach and kale in the juice, the stronger it is. Starting out, you might wish to have a higher percentage of apples and cucumbers, but later you’ll want to increase the amount of greens. Green leafy vegetables are incredibly healthy and great sources of antioxidants, trace minerals, vitamins A, B, C, E and K.

Pineapple Juice

Pineapple juice is one of my favorite juices for when I’m feeling that “tropical, holiday” mood. It’s also a great juice for serving up at parties, for some reason, it’s really festive!

So there you have it! My favorite juice recipes :)

Vitamix Blenders

Feb 29 2012 Published by Alannah H under Juicers

vitamix blenderOn this website, I talk about kitchen appliances, juicing for better health and juicers – but I’m not really into reviewing performance blenders. However, I’ve recently been researching smoothie makers, since I’d like to be able substitute some meals with smoothies, and I’ve narrowed down my choice to the Blendtec blenders or a Vitamix blender.

Click Here To Compare Best Prices For Vitamix Blenders

My friend Christine owns a Vitamix blender, and I was able to see it in action when I went to visit her. I told her about my website, and that I’d like to buy a performance blender for myself, and whether she’d like to write a review of her blender for my website. Thankfully she said yes, and I’m able to print her review below:

Vitamix Blender Review

vitamix blenderHello this is Christina with my review of the Vitamix blender. Alannah told me that she’s choosing between a Vitamix and a Blendtec. However I don’t own a Blendtec so I can’t really compare the two. What I do know is that I love my Vitamix!

I was getting quite worried about my family’s health since morning’s are a rush and the kids just help themselves to sugary cereals, and my husband sometimes misses breakfast entirely. Now that we have a smoothie maker, the kids have a much healthier breakfast and my husband takes his to work in a travel thermos.

Vitamix 1363 CIA Professional Series Blender

The blender I got is the Vitamix 1363 CIA Professional series blender. This is the one performance blender that is recommended by the Culinary Institute of America, and I wanted to know that I was getting the best.

I do have a citrus juicer at home but that only makes fresh orange juice, so obviously I needed something much more versatile and powerful.

The Vitamix works well for my family. Mornings are always hectic – now they’re noisy too! Thankfully the Vitamix is very efficient – once you add the fruits and ice, it takes only 40 seconds to make a great smoothie. This is very important for me since everyone in my family has different preferences! Nobody seems to want to have the same smoothie as someone else – that’s fine by me, since it just encourages the kids to be enthusiastic about smoothies and drink up what they love.

Best Price Vitamix Smoothie Maker

I do want the best smoothie maker but I also want to save some money. So after I decided to get the Vitamix, I compared prices at various stores. Prices at amazon.com turned out to be the best, especially compared to my local department stores. I’ve noticed this to be the case with many other items, like clothing, where prices are cheaper online.

There are some cheap Vitamix blenders which cost less than my model cost. I am sure they work just as well, after all they are made by Vitamix. However, I wanted to model that was endorsed by the Culinary Institute. Also the Vitamix 1363 came with a cool recipe guide that I wanted – this helped make sure that we were making tasty smoothies, instead of potentially not-so-yummy smoothies that would discourage the kids from drinking them.

Conclusion

In short, the Vitamix blender has been the best investment I’ve made in my family’s health this year. My family are eating much more healthy fruits and vegetables than they have ever eaten on a regular basis, before.

Masticating Juicers

Feb 29 2012 Published by Alannah H under Juicers

omega j8005Masticating juicers are some of the most popular juicers available. The main difference between masticating juicers and centrifugal juicers is the juicing mechanism. Masticating juicers use a crushing and grinding mechanism while the centrifugal juicers use a chopping motion with blades.

Avid juicers say that masticating juicers allow the enzymes to be preserved and prevent oxidation. You can read more on oxidation here: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=0006947D-57E8-1C72-9EB7809EC588F2D7

In addition, many popular masticating juicers such as the Omega juicers are also slow speed juicers. This means that the juicer and the juice stay cool and the juice is not oxidized by heat in any way.

Some of the popular masticating juicers are made by Omega and their two best-selling models are the vertical VRT350 HD and the horizontal J8006. The VRT350 has a smaller base, which means that it is easier to keep out on the countertop, however the J8006 series costs a bit less.

One negative about the masticating juicers is that they take longer to make the juice when compared to centrifugal juicers. They take a minute or two extra because of the way they create the juice. Also, most masticating juicers have openings that are smaller than those of popular centrifugal juicers. For instance, the best centrifugal juicer, the Breville BJE has an opening of 3″ which is large enough to insert a whole medium-sized apple. However the Omega masticating juicers have openings of 1.5″ – 1.75″. This means that with masticating juicers you will need to chop up produce into smaller pieces and this will take a bit of extra time.

On the other hand, an advantage of masticating juicers is the fact that they are much quieter than centrifugal juicers, again due to the mechanism they use to make the juice.

As you can see, the choice between masticating vs centrifugal juicers is not as clear-cut as you’d think. And to throw into the mix are wheatgrass juicers as well! Of course your choise will depend entirely on your needs and preferences. But if you’d like to buy a masticating juicer, some popular models aside from Omega are the Champion juicers, the Kuvings, the Hurom and the Green Power.

Wheatgrass Juicers

Feb 29 2012 Published by Alannah H under Tips

wheatgrassThe health benefits of wheatgrass juice are undeniable. Wheatgrass has recently come to the attention of the scientific community and studies indicate that it is disease preventive and can infact improve patients suffering from major diseases such as cancer.

Wheatgrass Benefits

Wheatgrass contains antioxidant and disease-preventive benefits. It contains large amounts of chlorophyll, and high amounts of vitamins A, B, C and E. It also contains many amino acids and minerals such as phosphorous, iron, magnesium and calcium. Wheatgrass is suitable for vegetarians who want more protein in their diet since it contains high levels of protein.

Studies on the cancer-reducing and disease-preventive qualities are not conclusive, but there is a lot of evidence indicating that wheatgrass is indeed beneficial for people suffering from cancer. Please see the references provided at the end of this article for more information about wheatgrass and disease prevention.

Wheatgrass is available in the form of tablets and juices at various stores such as health stores and online. However it is a much better idea to create your own organic juice at home: this is a very simple undertaking provided that you have a good juicer and a wheatgrass kit. Juice created at home is more nutritious than commercial juices, since more of the enzymes are intact and home made juice is not oxidized.

Making Wheatgrass Juice At Home

It is quite simple to make wheatgrass juice at home, provided you have the right tools.

Of course the first thing you need to do is to grow the wheatgrass. Trust me, it’s really easy! I have a very black thumb and tend to kill plants, however I have been able to successfully grow wheatgrass on my kitchen window sill – this proves to me that if I can grow wheatgrass then anybody can! Wheatgrass kits are available online and in some nurseries.

The next thing you need of course is a good juicer that can juice wheatgrass. If you are serious about juicing wheatgrass, then regardless of what juicer you buy please always check the reviews to verify that you can juice wheatgrass with that particular juicer. I cover the best juicers on my website and I may have easily missed out on some juicer that you’re interested in. However, I’ll mention right now that two of the best options if you’re serious about wheatgrass juicing are the Omega J8003 – J8006 series models and the Super Angel 5500 juicer. For some reason, the lower priced Omega J8006 series does a better job juicing wheatgrass than the more popular and more expensive Omega VRT350 HD.

Centrifugal juicers cannot be used to juice wheatgrass, so if a juicer’s specifications mention that it is a centrifugal juicer, then it’s out of the picture. In order to juice wheatgrass, you’ll want either a masticating juicer or a twin gear (triturating) juicer.

A twin gear juicer is a better option and is more efficient at juicing wheatgrass than a masticating juicer. The best twin gear juicer out there is the Super Angel 5500. Of course, a twin gear juicer also costs more than a masticating juicer. Twin gear juicers operate by having two augers rotate very close to each other, squeezing out the juice as they do so. Masticating juicers have one auger that operates on a grinding/crushing principle.

The best masticating juicer for making wheatgrass is the Omega J8006/J8004. These two are basically the same juicer, with just slightly different exteriors, the J8006 has a black and chrome exterior and the J8004 has a white exterior.

The Omega juicers have an added advantage in that they can also be used to perform certain food processing tasks such as making nut butters, baby food, frozen desserts, pasta, etc.

And of course you can always use your wheatgrass juicer to make other kinds of fruit and vegetable juices :)

Omega Juicer Reviews

Feb 28 2012 Published by Alannah H under Juicers

Omega is one of the most popular brands when it comes to juicers, and if you’re considering buying a new juicer then most likely you’ve come across a number of Omega juicer reviews. Infact, the Omega VRT350HD is my pick as the best masticating juicer.

Click Here To Browse Best Priced Omega Juicers

Many avid juicers own an Omega juicer since these are some of the best juicers on the market and certainly some of the most efficient juicers available. Omega horizontal masticating juicers are also extremely popular with consumers and can even be used to make wheatgrass juice.

History Of Omega Juicers

Omega Products was founded in 1985 and was soon reputed to make some of the best juicers around.

In 2009, Omega merged with Legacy Companies. Omega has been around for decades and their juicers are efficient, easy to use and durable. Omega juicers are used in households as well as commercially in juice bars. Omega juicers tend to have warranties of ten to fifteen years – because their juicers last for so long, Omega is able to offer such extended warranties. Omega manufactures a number of models of juicers, but their popular juicer models are the vertical masticating juicers and the horizontal masticating juicers.

Omega Vertical Masticating Juicers

omega vrt350The Omega VRT350HD is one of the most popular masticating juicers and is my pick for the top masticating juicer available on the market today.

Masticating juicers are usually horizontal, which means that they take up a lot of countertop space. However the Omega vert350 hd has a small base and a stylish design, which makes it easy to leave this juicer out of the countertop for easy access, even if you have a small kitchen.

In addition to its stylish good looks, the Omega VRT350 is also an extremely efficient juicer with a very high juice yield. This means that this is a very economical model to use, since it needs less produce to extract the same amount of juice.

The juice produced by the Omega VRT350 is extremely nutritious. Omega uses a special 8-RPM slow speed technology to ensure that the juice stays cool, enzymes stay intact and there is no oxidation.

The Omega VRT330 is similar to the VRT 350. However the VRT350 has a chrome and black design while the VRT330 is white; in addition the VRT350 has a finer juice strainer.

Omega Horizontal Juicers

Omega horizontal juicers are also incredibly popular with consumers. Their best-selling models are the J8003-J8006 series.

omega j8005Like the vertical Omega masticating juicers, these horizontal juicers are also extremely efficient and have a high juice yield. They use the same slow speed technology to ensure that the juice stays cool, there is no oxidation and the enzymes stay intact.

The Omega J8006/J8004 series have 15 year warranties and a GE Ultem auger which is stronger and more durable than other augers. The J8005/J8003 series have a regular auger and ten year warranties. To read my full review of the Omega horizontal masticating juicers, please click here.

In addition to making fruit and vegetable juices, these horizontal juicers can also be used to make wheatgrass juice. If you’d like to juice wheatgrass on a regular basis, please read my wheatgrass juicers review here.

Finally, these horizontal juicers can also be used for a range of food processing tasks such as making nut butters, pasta, frozen desserts, baby food and more.

Juicing is now a habit that many health conscious people perform regularly. It is not a fad or “new age” or “hippy” thing to do. Instead, it has been proven that juicing has many health benefits including disease prevention, reducing disease impact and anti-aging and detoxification properties. People who juice regularly soon realise that they have better health, more energy and higher levels of attentiveness and productivity.

Champion Juicer G5-PG710/20 Commercial Heavy Duty Juicer

Feb 28 2012 Published by Alannah H under Juicers

I’ve heard a number of good things about the Champion Juicer G5-PG710/20 Commercial Heavy Duty Juicer and have had the chance to try it out at a friend’s house. This is a masticating juicer, and I noticed that it was easy to use and easy to clean. The juice was also pretty tasty, however I noticed that the pulp was a bit juicier than the pulp that remains when I use my Omega or Super Angel, indicating that this juicer is not as efficient as the Omega or Super Angel.

Click Here To Compare Best Prices On Champion Juicers

However, since I don’t actually own this juicer and have just used it at my friend’s house, I didn’t want to write a review of it myself since I might give you incomplete information. Instead I asked my friend if she would write a review for me, and she agreed. Here’s her review:

Champion Juicer G5-PG710/20 Commercial Heavy Duty Juicer Review

Champion JuicerI bought my Champion juicer a few months ago and when I got it, it was heavily discounted. It cost me around $150 less than the comparable Omega, and I decided to take a risk and go for this model.

I’m pretty happy with my juicer. Of course it’s a masticating juicer which means that the juice it makes is more nutritious and enzymes are intact, etc.

I know that Alannah thinks that this juicer is not as efficient as more high end models and that the pulp is a bit wet but it doesn’t really bother me. I’ve read on the internet that you can buy an attachment to collect the pulp and then use a hydraulic press to squeeze out any remaining juice, but that seems a bit extreme to me and I’m happy with using the juicer as it is.

The Champion comes with nylon parts unlike most high end juicers which come with stainless steel parts. This was a drawback in my eyes and most people say that because the parts are bendy nylon they do not break. However I have also read a reviewer who said that his blades were dull within a few months and Champion happily replaced them.

Champion juicers are made in the USA which is quite rare these days. Maybe that’s why their customer service is good. However their warranty is a 10 year limited warranty unlike the Omega which comes with a 10 or 15 year unlimited warranty.

Still, I’m very happy with my juicer, I’ve never had any issue with it. Things like overheating, clogging etc have never happened with my juicer.

Instead it’s very easy to use and all I have to do is place it next to the sink when I use it. The juicer does not have a compartment for storing the pulp and the pulp ejects out of the front, so it falls directly into the sink. Cleaning up the juicer is also very easy, I just rinse the parts under the tap. I see no need to use my dishwasher for this. Because parts are plastic they do stain. However you can bleach them once a month to make them whiter.

This is not a self-feeding juicer unlike many of the popular juicers out there. This means that you actually have to press the produce down but this is not too much of an issue for me.

This juicer does make green juice but I’m not too fond of green juice myself. You can definitely make green juice with this juicer though. However I’m not too sure if it will juice wheatgrass.

One of the things I like about this juicer is that it can easily be used to make frozen desserts. I think it can be used for other food processing tasks like making nut butters, etc but I just make frozen desserts. You can use banana, pineapple and other fruits to make fabulous soft serve or frozen smoothies. These are 100% healthy and make for great desserts in the summer.

I’m really happy with how my juicer works. However, it does have some drawbacks, like the nylon parts and the fact that it’s self-feeding, and some people might prefer a more efficient juicer. However I am happy with my juicer and the fact that I got it at a great discount was important to me. Overall, I do like the Champion juicer I own.

Best Juicer Under $150 To Buy

Feb 28 2012 Published by Alannah H under Juicers

Sometimes you want to be lead a healthy lifestyle and start juicing, but you can’t afford to shell out the big bucks – that’s when you start looking for good juicers under $100.

Click Here To Compare Best Prices On Breville Economy Juicers, and Juicers Under $150

juicers under $100The truth is that the juicers you will find in this price range are not always the best quality and you will not be able to get masticating or twin gear juicers. However, if you are determined to buy a cheap juicer under $150 then I recommend getting a Breville BJE200XL. There are other cheap juicers under $150 out there that are manufactured by unheard-of brands but they come with mixed reviews.

Breville on the other hand, has a great reputation when it comes to juicers and the BJE200XL is no exception. It may lack some frills of higher end models but it is a solid juicer and makes a great jug of juice. You can sometimes find it on sale for around $120, but most often it will set you back around $150.

Breville BJE200XL Review

The Breville BJE200 is known as the economy Breville model. It is a compact juicer and is efficient at getting the job done. Unlike masticating and twin gear juicers which take a while to get the juice ready, the Breville juicer takes around 5 seconds to make the juice. This is great, especially if you’re impatient when your juice is being made!

The Breville is a bit noisy, but it does only take a few seconds to make the juice, so the noise shouldn’t matter too much!

The parts are dishwasher safe, however I would recommend just rinsing them out immediately – it takes two minutes to do and just makes life so much easier. If you leave the parts unwashed then juice tends to dry on them which makes cleaning more difficult. The juicer comes with a brush to make cleaning the filter basket easier.

The BJE200XL comes with an 800 ml juice jug which has a built in foam remover. This is a good thing because the juice produced by most centrifugal juicers is quite foamy. I personally don’t like foam on my juice and will remove it immediately. However if you like to have the foam, then you can just remove the top part of the jug and you’ll have foam on your juice!

The instruction booklet that the juicer comes with has a number of good recipes and even some recipes for alcoholic drinks you can make with this juicer!

Overall, when it comes to low price juicers, the Breville BJE200XL is definitely the best choice.

Breville 800JEXL

Feb 28 2012 Published by Alannah H under Juicers

breville 800jexl The Breville 800JEXL is my pick as the best centrifugal juicer. Breville juicers are some very high quality juicers and what attracts many people to the 800JEXL initially is its glamorous styling. The stainless steel exterior of this machine looks incredible. But more importantly the stainless steel means that you can clean it easily. This is a powerful machine that is capable of producing high quality juice in mere seconds.

Click Here For The Best Prices on Breville 800JEXL Juicers

This juicer comes with an extra large 3″ feed chute. Many experienced juicers will realise what a big difference such a large feed chute can mean. It basically means that you will waste a lot less time preparing your produce and chopping them into smaller bits, the prep time can really add up when you juice on a regular basis. The large opening means that you can even throw in whole apples and still create the best tasting apple juice.

The electronic controls offer you a choice of two speeds and the machine comes with a safety locking arm, a juicer cover that’s needed to prevent splatters and food being shot up at the ceiling, a stainless steel mesh filter basket, 1 litre jug for the juice, a food pusher, a cleaning brush and a froth separator.

The Breville 800JEXL is at the end of the day a very solidly constructed juicer. It is designed to create a good juicing experience and is just as easy to clean as it is to use. The biggest difference with using a Breville juicer is the fact that it is so quick to make juices. It has your juice ready in mere seconds – compare this with other masticating juicers and twin gear juicers which take around five minutes to create the juice!

The Breville is a centrifugal juicer which means that it’s good at juicing solid fruits and vegetables but is unable to juice green leafy vegetables. If you want to make green juices you should get a masticating juicer or a twin gear juicer. If you’re undecided about the mechanism of the juicer you want, you might enjoy reading this guide about how to choose a juicer. For folks who prefer speed and simplicity when it comes to juicing, a centrifugal juicer like the Breville juicer might be the answer.

The 800JEXL Juice Fountain Elite is actually the best Breville juicer available as well as the best centrifugal juicer. It has a high wattage of 1000-watts, or 1-1/3 horsepower, which means that it will juice your produce much faster more efficiently than the other models which have less powerful engines. The Breville comes with an inbuilt electronic “smart chip” which controls how much power is transferred to the blades – if you use harder vegetables such as carrots, for instance, it will use more power automatically. The juicer’s knife blades are titanium-coated to ensure better juicing.

You may wish to compare this model with a cheap Breville BJE510XL which costs around $100 less. You can read the full review of the Breville BJE510XL here. The best price Breville 800JEXL usually costs around $300 or so if you do shop online.

With any centrifugal juicer, you will have to keep in mind that the juice extraction will not be as efficient as with a masticating juicer, however this tradeoff means that you’ll be able to make juice much more quickly using a centrifugal juicer.

History Of Juicers

Feb 28 2012 Published by Alannah H under Juicers

It seems like juicing and juicers have been around for every – apparently juicing has even been mentioned in ancient scrolls! That’s as early as 100BC. So through history many people have realized the benefits that come with consuming juices from raw fruits and vegetables.

Because of this, commercial juicers were first developed. The very first juicers were rather unwieldy large machines that used a hydraulic press to squeeze the juice out. This concept is still used today in large commercial juicers but there have been some changes to make the process smoother and more streamlined.

Many of the improvements that have come about in juicing were due to an American named Norman Walker. He did a lot of research on the benefits of consuming juiced produce rather than raw fruits and vegetables. In 1930, he created a line of juicers that are still available today, called the Norwalk juicers. These are some of the most expensive juicers available. Dr Walker did not just research juicing and develop juicers, he also drank a large amount of raw juice each day. Records claim he lived a healthy life till he was 93, when he died peacefully in his sleep.

Due to Dr Walker’s work, the popularity of juicing developed. Manufacturers began to streamline the juicing machines and developed juicers that were suitable for home use. These juicers were smaller in size and have been developed over the years to become more attractive-looking and more efficient. Prices also started to get lower, and juicers became used in more and more households.

Feb 16 2012 Published by Alannah H under Tips

pressure cooker tips 1 liquidIf you’re new to using a pressure cooker to cook, then you’re probably thrilled by how much less time you’ll need to prepare your food. However, you probably also have a lot of questions, and I’ll try to answer them in this series of posts on Pressure Cooker Tips!

Pressure Cooker Tip 1 : Use The Right Amount Of Liquid

What is the right amount of liquid when cooking with a pressure cooker? First of all, the recipes will tell you how much liquid you’ll need. You’ll most likely be surprised that you need so little liquid – but the fact is that pressurized cooking means you need less water or liquids. Because the liquid will not evaporate, you need less of it.

You are free to add a bit more liquid if you’d like, but make sure not to add too little, compared to what the recipe states.Read the manual to understand just how much liquid it’s recommended to add. However, as a general rule of thumb, you should never fill your pressure cooker more than half-way with liquid.
